We understand the concerns that our customers put forward with regards to the sustainability of current UK fish stocks. The Fin and Flounder offer the highest quality fresh fish which we will always try to source on recommendations from the MCS (Marine Conservation). If we are unable source fish from the preferred areas outlined as below, we will not offer that product. As such you may see certain species missing from our fish slab. We will always try to follow our sourcing policy as below, so you as the consumer will always have a clear conscience when you purchase from the Fin and Flounder.
- Wild caught fish should be sourced from managed stocks
- Sourcing from stocks that pose a threat to the integrity of the stock is avoided
- Farmed fish sourced from well managed farms that farm to high environmental standard
- Farmed fish should be fully traceable to production site
- Should be sourced from fisheries or farms that have been certified by independent international certification bodies such as the Marine Stewardship Council, Soil Association (UK) or RSPCA monitored Freedom Foods Scheme
- Favoured fishing methods will always be our main priority when sourcing our stock (Line Caught, Dived, hand gathered, Sine Netted etc)
Sustainability guide
Fish to eat..
Fish from well-managed, sustainable stocks. Dark green indicate species that are, in MCS' opinion, the best choice and lighter green the next best choices.
Fish to eat with caution..
Fish from fisheries that are at risk of becoming unsustainable due to environmental, management or stock issues. MCS recommends that you only eat these fish occasionally. The lighter yellow represents the better choice.
Fish to avoid...
Fish from unsustainable, overfished, vulnerable and/or badly managed fisheries, and/or with high levels of by-catch. In MCS' opinion it is best to avoid these fish at present.
